The term may stem from the idea of playing 'neither for love nor money' – i.e. for nothing but enjoyment of the game. A similar Dutch phrase may also be the source of the word. 'Ets voor lof doen' describes the attitude of playing purely for honour, rather than monetary gain. Yet another theory suggests that the word results from the French word for egg, 'l'oeuf' because an egg-shape resembles a zero.
