The origin of the word 'pidgin' is thought to be the Chinese pronunciation of 'business'.
The term was first used to describe Chinese Pidgin English, which initiated in the 17th century when British traders arrived in South China. The word 'pidgin', may also be derived from the English word pigeon. Pigeons were used to carry messages, and thus became associated with communication.
